As if the high school years weren’t stressful enough for today’s teenagers, the thought of classmates walking around on campus while packing heat might be just enough to either increase the number of kids interested in home schooling or send them back to their laptops and the “Covid days” of online learning.
Whatever the concerns of individual members of the student body at Santa Barbara County’s Vandenberg Village Cabrillo High School might be regarding loaded firearms on campus, on the afternoon of March 28th those concerns immediately rose to the state of alarm among school administrators.
According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Raquel Zick, the discovery of “a loaded handgun” in the possession of 18-year-old student Jesus Barajas-Lemus was made pursuant to an unannounced probation search of his person. That search, conducted by the on-campus Sheriff’s Department School Resource Deputy, further determined that the weapon was not registered to Barajas- Lemus.
At that point, the young man was removed from campus and transported to Santa Barbara County Northern Branch Jail, where he awaits booking on various firearms and probation violations.
According to Zick, “There are no additional campus safety concerns directly related to this incident.”
