On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at approximately 10:40 PM, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a Shot Spotter activation indicating two rounds fired at an apartment complex located on 1100 Howe Avenue in Sacramento. Subsequently, multiple individuals called 911 reporting that two females had sustained gunshot wounds. North Patrol Deputies swiftly responded to the scene and discovered two adult females on the ground, both suffering from gunshot injuries. Tragically, both victims were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Following the incident, Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators promptly arrived at the scene to commence their investigation. Witness interviews were conducted, and evidence was collected in order to ascertain the sequence of events. Detectives identified the suspect as 32-year-old Ricky Hunter and obtained an arrest warrant for his apprehension in connection with both murders.
On Thursday, April 11, 2024, just after 2:00 PM, Sheriff’s Detectives located Hunter inside a cell phone store situated on the 1700 block of Arden Way. Considering Hunter to be armed and dangerous, and in a concerted effort to prevent any potential harm within a crowded shopping area, detectives exercised caution in their approach. They awaited Hunter’s return to his parked vehicle within the store’s parking lot. Once Hunter entered his vehicle, detectives swiftly converged on him at gunpoint to effect his arrest. However, Hunter retrieved a shotgun from within the vehicle and inflicted a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest.
Detectives acted swiftly to extract Hunter from the vehicle and immediately commenced administering first aid. Hunter was subsequently transported to the hospital via ambulance with life-threatening injuries, where he currently remains under medical care.
