“Last night, our officers responded to reports of a fire incident at the John W. Wells Youth Center Playground. The fire caused significant damage to approximately one quarter of the play equipment. Shockingly, this marks the second playground fire in our community this week, following an incident at the Rotary Park playground last Sunday.
Detectives are working with fire investigators to investigate the suspicious circumstances surrounding these events. Initial findings suggest the use of accelerants in both cases, indicating deliberate and suspicious intent.
Our playgrounds are built to promote recreational opportunities and lasting memories for the children and families of our community. The potentially deliberate targeting of children’s playground equipment at our local parks is not just deeply concerning but outright unacceptable. We will do everything in our power to identify the culprit(s) and prosecute them to the full extent of the law.
We ask that any residents who may have information surrounding these events contact us at (559) 675-4220 (you can remain anonymous).”
