Police in Newport Beach are reportedly investigating a home invasion robbery that ended with one suspect being shot by one of the victims and the other dead of an apparent suicide.
According to a press release by the Newport Beach Police Department, the robbery took place in the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 16, in the neighborhood of Newport Coast, and appears to have been a “targeted incident” involving a prior connection of some sort between the suspects and victims.
Around 4:45 that morning, 9-1-1 dispatch received a call reporting a possible home invasion in the area of Newport Coast Drive and Pelican Hill Road North. The caller reportedly stated that a resident of the home had shot one of the suspects, and that this suspect and one other fled the house.
Newport Beach police officers responded to the area and discovered an armed man lying in the street with apparent gunshot wounds. This individual was taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said.
Police found the second suspect in bushes near the victim’s home, dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
All four people who were at the residence at the time of the robbery were evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported. The investigation is active and ongoing.
