SAN RAMON —A distraught man phoned police, threatened to kill his wife, and barricaded himself inside their residence. The Central County SWAT team was activated to help San Ramon police resolve the situation. Brian R. Smith, a 60-year-old resident of San Ramon, was placed under arrest. Turns out Smith had a small arsenal of firearms.

San Ramon officers responded on April 26 to 2135 Canyon Lakes Drive. The wife was safely evacuated while Smith barricaded himself inside their home. Officers were unable at the time to contact Smith by phone.

The Central County SWAT team joined with San Ramon police outside the residence. The SWAT team includes officers from Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, and the BART Police Department. The area was cordoned off and nearby traffic was diverted as a precaution.

More attempts were made to contact Smith by phone without any success. The SWAT team surrounded the home and ordered Smith to give himself up. After about a half hour of de-escalation negotiations, Smith finally surrendered himself.

San Ramon detectives conducted a search of the residence next. Inside they found a small arsenal of firearms. There were handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Eleven firearms in total were confiscated.

Smith was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. He was booked for making threats of violence and exhibiting a firearm in a threatening manner. However, he is no longer in custody at the county jailhouse.
