Two Arrested in Connection with Alleged Attempted Robbery, Shooting
Two individuals were recently arrested after an alleged attempted robbery and shooting in Leggett, Mendocino County.
On the evening of May 10, deputies responded to a property on the 51400 block of North Highway 101 in Leggett to investigate a report that a man had been shot in the hand, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
The initial investigation revealed that two individuals, identified as Gregory Mark Cox and Amanda Dee Chapman, had allegedly trespassed onto the victim’s property. The victim and his girlfriend returned home and discovered the two, resulting in an argument, during which Chapman allegedly pointed a firearm at the victim.
Chapman allegedly shot the victim in the hand when the victim tried to take the gun away. Cox and Chapman then fled the scene.
For their own safety, the victim and his girlfriend barricaded themselves inside their home and contacted law enforcement. The victim reported seeing a dark-colored pickup truck near the property’s entrance gate upon their arrival, which he suspected belonged to Chapman and Cox.
Upon arrival, deputies provided immediate medical attention to the victim and conducted a search of the area. Neither Cox and Chapman nor the pickup truck were located at that time.
The Sheriff’s Office broadcasted a Be-On-The-Look-Out (BOLO) alert for Cox, Chapman, and the pickup truck to law enforcement agencies across Mendocino, Humboldt, and Lake Counties.
The following morning, a deputy spotted the suspect’s pickup truck while on duty north of the Willits area. The truck was seen entering Willits, and the deputy initiated a pursuit.
The deputy pursued the vehicle into Willits, and Chapman was reportedly later seen near a residence in Willits. Law enforcement apprehended Chapman and Cox soon afterward.
Authorities later obtained a search warrant and conducted a search of the residence and vehicle, resulting in the discovery of additional evidence.
Chapman was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, attempted second-degree robbery, conspiracy, and committing a felony while armed.
Cox was arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree robbery and conspiracy.
