Suspect in Fatal Santa Rosa Shooting Reportedly Arrested in Elk Grove

A man identified as the primary suspect in a fatal shooting in Santa Rosa has reportedly been located and arrested in Elk Grove.

In a press release, the Santa Rosa Police Department announced that Diego Kona Kekhuna, 19, of Sacramento, was arrested in Elk Grove by detectives from the Santa Rosa Police Department Violent Crimes Investigations Team.

The arrest followed an investigation into the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man in Santa Rosa on May 13 of this year.

Just after 9 PM on Monday, May 13, multiple area residents called 911 to report hearing several gunshots on Slater Street. Officers arrived within minutes and found a 20-year-old male gunshot victim on the east sidewalk of the 700 block of Slater Street. The victim was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene.

At this time, investigators reportedly believe that Kekhuna had arrived uninvited at a female acquaintance’s home and initiated an argument in front of the residence. The male victim exited the residence and walked toward Kekhuna and the female. Kekhuna then allegedly shot the male victim multiple times in the chest.

After the shooting, Kekhuna allegedly hid the firearm in the wheel well of a parked truck and fled north on Slater Street. Detectives later recovered the firearm.

Information gathered during the night indicated that Kekhuna was the sole alleged shooter and was hiding at a family member’s home in Elk Grove.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Kekhuna and a search warrant for a residence on the 9400 block of Ranch Park Way in Elk Grove. On the morning of May 14, at approximately 9 AM, VCI detectives, with the assistance of Elk Grove Police Department SWAT, served both the search and arrest warrants at the residence.

Kekhuna was taken into custody without incident on suspicion of murder and booked at the Sonoma County jail.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Any person arrested on suspicion of a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
