Gilroy Woman Arrested for Allegedly Leading Police on Pursuit in Stolen Vehicle

Hollister Police officers recently arrested an individual on suspicion of carjacking after a vehicle pursuit.

In a press release, police identified Sonya Ortiz, 35, of Gilroy as the primary suspect in an alleged carjacking and shooting that occurred on June 5. That day, just before midnight, officers had received a notification from the FLOCK camera system about a stolen vehicle seen near San Juan Hollister Road and Graf Road.

Just after 12 AM the next day, officers received a second notification of the same gold-colored Infiniti sedan near Meridian Street.

The San Jose Police Department had entered the vehicle into the stolen vehicle system after receiving a report of the car being stolen and the victim allegedly being shot on June 5, in San Jose. The suspect was still outstanding.

An officer responded to the area to locate the vehicle. While on Highway 25 and Meridian, the officer saw a vehicle matching the description of the stolen one traveling north on Highway 25 at a high rate of speed. The officer attempted a traffic stop but the driver did not yield, resulting in a pursuit.

Hollister Police officers, along with the California Highway Patrol, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, and Gilroy Police Department, pursued the vehicle into southern Santa Clara County and back into San Benito County.

The vehicle eventually stopped at Highway 101 just north of Highway 156.

The suspect allegedly attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended with the aid of a K-9 unit from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, police said.

The suspect was medically cleared at the hospital and booked at the San Benito County jail on suspicion of evading a peace officer in a reckless manner, driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a stolen vehicle.

San Jose Police Detectives responded to the scene and took possession of the vehicle.
