Property Owner Identified as Suspect in Fatal Shooting in Fresno County
A Fresno County man was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of another man on his property, according to authorities.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office reported that dispatchers received a call about a shooting on the 38000 block of Squaw Valley Road on the night of Wednesday, June 12.
Responding deputies discovered a man lying outside who appeared to have been shot. Deputies reportedly attempted to provide medical aid, but the victim, identified as 49-year-old Burton Jones, was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene.
Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Unit personnel responded to gather evidence and conduct interviews.
Detectives identified the property owner, 56-year-old Jerry Beggs of Squaw Valley, as the primary suspect in the shooting.
Beggs was ultimately booked at the Fresno County jail on suspicion of murder.
The Sheriff’s Office revealed that Beggs and Jones had been longtime friends, but did not provide additional details. The investigation remains active as detectives work to identify a specific chain of events and possible motive.
The case has since been forwarded to the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office, authorities said.
