Storage Facility Burglars Caught

“Arrests made in storage facility burglaries

Modesto Police Department detectives have arrested four suspects responsible for a series of storage unit burglaries dating back to January of this year. Those arrested were identified as Paul Chavez (41), Lisa Chavez (43), Jose Alizaga (43), and Dianna Franco (36). All were booked on multiple charges related to burglary, possession of stolen property, and probation violations. Lisa, Jose, and Dianna are from Modesto, while Paul is from Nevada.

On June 10, 2024, a Modesto police officer investigated a report of a burglary at Prime Storage, located at 1234 McHenry Ave. The victim provided detailed information that assisted detectives in locating video footage of the unit being burglarized. From that video, detectives developed suspect information and discovered that several units at 1234 McHenry Ave, as well as others at Express Storage located at 2101 Sylvan Ave, had been burglarized over the past few months. Both businesses were extremely cooperative and helpful throughout this investigation, directing Detectives to possible additional victims.

During the investigation, detectives discovered that the suspects also had storage units at these same facilities. They obtained search warrants for these units, and upon searching them, they located large quantities of stolen property belonging to victims who had rented units at these facilities.

Some of the stolen property has been returned to the rightful owners; however, detectives have much more property they believe may be stolen in their possession. If you or someone you know has a storage unit at one of these facilities, we encourage you to check the status of your unit. If you discover your unit has been burglarized, or have previously reported your unit burglarized and would like to see if any of the recovered property belongs to you, please contact Detective Jacob Hook at 209-572-9665 orhookj@modestopd.com. The recovered property will be available for viewing by appointment with Detective Hook until Monday, July 1. After this date, all remaining recovered property will be booked into our evidence storage facility per MPD policy.

Modesto Police detectives also have some tips on how you can keep your property safe when using a storage facility:

Check on your storage unit at least once a month, preferably every other week.

Use a high-quality lock to secure the door.If the facility allows, place your own video surveillance inside your unit.”
