A Calaveras County woman reportedly faces charges of felony child endangerment after an alleged incident in Copperopolis late last month.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the incident began on the morning of June 30 when they received a report of a toddler walking in the roadway near Little John Road and Copper Cove Drive in Copperopolis.
Witnesses at the scene told responding deputies that a woman had been carrying the one-year-old child while walking along Quiver Street, near Littlejohn Road, and had been displaying erratic behavior — allegedly yelling and throwing rocks at animals and trying to wave down passing vehicles.
The woman then reportedly tried to confront a vehicle that had stopped nearby, allegedly leaving the child unattended on the hot pavement wearing only one shoe.
Another witness at the scene picked up the child to make sure they wouldn’t be harmed, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The woman then allegedly left the area without the child.
Deputies responded to the woman’s residence and took her into custody, noting that she was showing symptoms of being under the influence of methamphetamine, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies searched the residence and reportedly discovered soiled diapers on the floor of the master bedroom, dog feces on the floor of the living room, broken windows with exposed shards of glass, and large amounts of dirty laundry throughout the house.
Due to the dangerous condition of the home, the Sheriff’s Office requested Child Protective Services to assist with the investigation and take custody of the child.
The woman, whom the Sheriff’s Office identified as 33-year-old Ashley Agasi, was treated at an area hospital after being taken into custody.
After being released from the hospital, she was booked on suspicion of felony child endangerment, being under the influence of a controlled substance, and resisting peace officers.
