OAKLAND — A man suspected of attacking two elderly women on San Pablo Avenue in Oakland was arrested nearby in Emeryville. Clarence J. Esteen, 31, of Antioch, remains in custody at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail. He is ineligible for release on bond.
Esteen was released recently from prison for a prior firearm assault and robbery conviction. The new crimes that he allegedly committed occurred on the 5500 block of San Pablo Avenue on July 5 at approximately 6:30 p.m.
The two elderly women were beaten and robbed during an attack recorded on surveillance video. An off-duty Oakland officer and other witnesses followed the suspect, and they pointed him out to responding Oakland officers.
Esteen was arrested July 5 at 7:24 p.m. He was booked for kidnapping, false imprisonment by violence,
battery, robbery, violation of parole, and other offenses. Esteen is suspected of also committing three other robberies in the area.
Multiple charges including second-degree robbery were filed on July 9 against Esteen, involving other robberies. However, no charges were filed for the July 5 incident, as the identities of the elderly victims are unknown.
In a prepared statement Oakland police said. “The off-duty officer helped in recovering and returning the stolen items to the victims, who immediately left the area. The Oakland Police Department is seeking assistance from the community to identify the victims.” Anyone with information about either victim can contact the OPD criminal investigations division at 510-238-3326.
