BRENTWOOD — Officers dispatched to check a suspicious vehicle last Sunday night arrested the driver. The vehicle was parked, but the driver attracted attention to himself because he was slumped over. It turns out the man was armed.
The incident occurred in a residential neighborhood, near the intersection of Windsor Way and Collett Court. Officers responded July 7 at approximately 11 p.m. Responding officers noticed the driver leaning down suspiciously towards the passenger seat.
It seems this driver was carrying an illegal machine gun. Brentwood police said in a prepared statement. “During a search of the vehicle an officer discovered a fully automatic firearm and magazines.” The firearm was not legally registered.
Upon further investigation, officers found blank key fobs and vehicle programming equipment. The driver who was inside the vehicle, 19-year-old Noel Mencias, of Alameda, was placed under arrest.
Mencias was taken to the Martinez Detention Facility for booking. However, he is no longer listed in the Contra Costa County jail inmate roster.
Mencias was booked subsequently on suspicion of the following charges –
- Carrying a loaded firearm on person or in vehicle PC 2580(A)
- Carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle PC 25400(A)
- Possession of a machine gun PC 32625(A)
Brentwood police said this incident highlights the importance of vigilant community members reporting suspicious activity. “Your awareness and cooperation play a crucial role in maintaining the safety and security of our community.”
