Stockton Man Arraigned on Felony Animal Cruelty Charges

Maurice Cosby Smith, 47, of Stockton, has reportedly been arraigned at the San Joaquin County Courthouse on felony animal cruelty and weapons charges.

According to a press release by the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, police began investigating on June 28 after a witness reported seeing Smith fire a BB gun at his dog while it was inside a cage. The witness reported seeing this happen on three separate occasions in late June and provided video evidence.

Officers arrested Smith on July 16.

Officers noted that the dog had suffered injuries consistent with being shot by a BB gun. A veterinarian later removed 11 BBs during surgery.

The dog will be re-homed once they recover, the District Attorney’s Office said.

During the arrest, officers allegedly found Smith in possession of a Glock 17 handgun and two ammo magazines, which he is prohibited from owning due to a 2005 felony conviction.

Smith has been charged with felony animal abuse, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and being a felon in possession of ammunition.

A further arraignment is scheduled for Aug. 16 in Department 8B at the San Joaquin County Courthouse.
