Redwood City police recently arrested an individual who allegedly fought with officers who had been investigating a report of a disturbance.
According to the Redwood City Police Department, officers were dispatched on the night of July 26 to Sequoia Station in response to a report of an individual causing a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers reportedly observed an individual matching the provided description.
The subject, whom police identified as Aaron Martinez, 31, saw the officers, allegedly cursed at them, and entered a Safeway store. Moments later, Martinez exited the store carrying two glass bottles of alcohol. The officers noted that Martinez had not been in the store long enough to have purchased the alcohol, police said.
When one officer attempted to question Martinez about the alcohol, Martinez allegedly struck the officer in the face with one of the bottles. Both officers attempted to detain Martinez and requested additional police units.
Martinez allegedly resisted their efforts to put him in handcuffs, leading to a struggle during which the officers deployed their tasers, which were reportedly not effective.
During the ordeal, a large crowd gathered and was reportedly antagonistic to the officers. San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputies responded to assist with crowd control and help secure the scene.
Officers eventually took Martinez into custody.
Martinez was transported to a local hospital for a medical check. After being medically cleared, he was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of theft, assault with a deadly weapon, assault on an officer, and resisting arrest.
Three officers were reportedly injured during the incident. One officer suffered a fractured ankle, another sustained a cut to the head requiring stitches, and a third officer had a minor cut to the hand that did not require medical treatment.
The injured officers were treated at a local hospital, with two being released after treatment, according to police.
