A Fresno man reportedly faces charges of murder and attempted murder for allegedly attacking his former girlfriend and her new partner.
On the afternoon of Monday, July 29, officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the area of East Balch Avenue and South Callish Avenue, police said in a press release. While en route, officers learned that someone at the scene had been stabbed.
Officers arrived at the scene and found a male victim, identified as 26-year-old Devin McNew, on the ground and suffering from severe blunt force trauma and multiple stab wounds.
A 26-year-old woman was also found at the scene, having suffered blunt force trauma to the head.
A third individual, identified as Jonathan Navarro, 26, was also found at the scene with a laceration to his wrist. This laceration was later found to be self-inflicted, police said.
All three were taken to an area medical center. McNew ultimately died as a result of his injuries.
Both the female victim and Navarro were treated and expected to survive.
Investigators soon discovered that Navarro and the female victim had recently ended a ten-year relationship, and that the victim and her new boyfriend — McNew — had arrived at location of the attack to drop off some of Navarro’s belongings.
At some point, a fight broke out between Navarro and McNew, during which Navarro allegedly stabbed McNew multiple times. Navarro also allegedly struck both McNew and the female victim several times with a garden shovel.
Once he is released from the hospital, Navarro is expected to be booked at the Fresno County jail on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, police said.
