Kern County authorities have reportedly arrested three people in connection with a fatal shooting in Bakersfield.

Sheriff’s deputies had responded on July 18 to a report of a shooting on the 1500 block of Mt. Vernon Ave. in east Bakersfield. The victim, identified as Robert Overdevest, had already been taken to an area hospital with major injuries, the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Three days later, on July 21, Overdevest reportedly passed away as a result of his injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office then began investigating the shooting as a homicide.

Detectives reportedly believe that Overdevest had gotten into an argument with three other individuals, one of whom allegedly shot him. The suspects are believed to have then fled the area in a vehicle.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, detectives identified the primary suspects in the case as Ashley Ruiz, 38; Rhys Casterline, 22; and Gabriel Valle, 24.

Ruiz was located and arrested on July 26, followed by Casterline on July 31, and finally Valle on August 1.

Ruiz was arrested on suspicion of murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. Casterline was arrested on suspicion of murder and conspiracy. Valle was arrested on suspicion of murder, conspiracy, and unspecified firearms charges.

All were booked at the Lerdo Jail Facility, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
