The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested an individual for suspected domestic battery.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on the morning of August 3 to a report of a disturbance on the 42000 block of Mattole Rd. in Petrolia — for the second time in as many days.

Deputies had responded to the same location the night before. During that call, deputies had arrived to find a victim who had been assaulted by a cohabitant. The victim reportedly sustained severe lacerations to their head and neck, and was flown to a hospital for treatment.

The suspect, identified as Sanford Carson, was not at the scene and deputies were unable to locate him that night.

Carson returned the next morning intoxicated and allegedly attacked a second individual, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies returned and Carson allegedly tried to flee on foot after first attempting to steal two vehicles, but ultimately fled on a side-by-side ATV with a flat tire. Deputies later located him and took him into custody without further incident.

Carson was booked at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on suspicion of domestic battery.

The investigation remains active, and anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 707-445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip Line at 707-268-2539.
