Former Swim Team President Faces 6 Felony Charges Involving Embezzlement

ALAMEDA — Sarah Lynn New, 45, a former president of a youth swimming team, has been charged for allegedly embezzling funds. New was arrested last month and released from custody for $30,000 bond. Felony charges were filed against New on August 2. The Alameda city resident faces six charges for embezzlement of great monetary value. She is accused of stealing more than $50,000 from the Alameda Gators Team.

Thefts occurred over a period of seven months. Funds from the team’s checking account were withdrawn using a debit card at an ATM machine. New evidently had access and used the account PIN number. The money was discovered missing after New was no longer employed by the team. KGO News reported that New was fired from her job as president of the team. It seems New was terminated after she refused to pay monthly dues for her child to participate.

New surrendered herself to the Alameda Police Department on July 2. She was transported and booked at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail.

The theft leaves the team in a financial bind. Teams members are reportedly raising funds. Plus, dues for membership were increased in an effort to keep the team afloat.
