A Madera County man has been arrested for the alleged sexual assault of a juvenile victim, but the District Attorney’s Office has since stated that more time is needed to gather sufficient evidence, according to new reports.

In a press release on August 5, the Chowchilla Police Department announced that they had arrested Arthur Knapp, 40, for the alleged violent sexual assault of a juvenile.

The juvenile had sustained injuries during the assault that required hospitalization and treatment, police said.

On August 6, YourCentralValley.com reported that the District Attorney’s Office had rejected the charges of rape by force or fear of immediate injury, attempted murder, and person who commits assault by means of force, great bodily injury, on the basis that more evidence was needed.

District Attorney Sally Moreno told the publication that, because Knapp is also accused of violating parole, he can be kept in custody up to 10 days while investigators gather more evidence.

Knapp, who has “a long history of violence and arrests,” remains in custody at the Madera County jail, according to the Chowchilla Police Department.
