Traffic Stop Nets Arrests of 3 Felons for Firearms Possession

BRENTWOOD —Three previously convicted felons—two adults and one juvenile on probation—
were arrested following a traffic stop. Evidently, driving around with an expired vehicle registration
attracted a patrol officer’s attention.
The officer patrolling Lone Tree Way near State Route 4 reportedly noticed a car with an expired registration. The
vehicle was pulled over on August 21 shortly before 10 p.m. The officer engaged with all three
occupants and conducted an identification check.
In addition to the juvenile being on probation, both of the adults are on supervised probation in
Alameda County. All three individuals are prohibited from possessing firearms because of their felony
criminal convictions.
Brentwood police said in a prepared statement. “The juvenile informed the officer that there were two
loaded guns inside the car.”
The officer arrested John A. Shurn, 44, and Kenny L. Hampton, 42, both Oakland residents, along with
the juvenile accompanying them. The firearms were confiscated. Shurn and Hampton were booked at
the Martinez Detention Facility for possession of firearms and related charges. The juvenile was
booked at John A. Davis Juvenile Hall in Martinez.
Shurn has multiple prior convictions for vehicle thefts. He also has prior convictions for battery,
possession of a controlled substance, and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person.
Hampton has prior convictions for possession of a controlled substance, sale/offering to sell a
controlled substance, and grand theft. That is in addition to his convictions for firearms-related
offenses and domestic violence.
