A police officer in Butte County has reportedly been arrested for the alleged distribution of child sexual abuse material.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office began investigating in July of 2024 after receiving a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Over the course of two months, investigators identified the suspect as Allen Charles, 47, of Magalia.

Authorities say Charles distributed the illicit material several times between 2019 and 2023.

On Aug. 27, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Charles.

The next morning, detectives, along with investigators from the District Attorney’s Office, located and arrested Charles at his home on suspicion of the possession of child pornography and distribution of child pornography.

Investigators also carried out a search warrant that same day, reportedly seizing additional evidence related to the case.

The Sheriff’s Office also revealed that Charles is employed as a campus police officer at Butte College.

The college has since put Charles on leave and suspended his peace officer credentials, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
