A Mendocino County man was recently arrested for the alleged possession of stolen mail and checks from a local business.
According to a press release by the Sheriff’s Office, in the early morning hours of Sept. 7, a deputy on foot patrol in Willits contacted a man known to be on formal probation.
Per the man’s probation terms, the deputy searched him and reportedly discovered checks belonging to a business in Fort Bragg. The value of the checks was over $250,000, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The individual was also allegedly found to be in possession of mail belonging to the same business.
The deputy developed probable cause to believe that the mail and checks had originally been delivered to the business’s mailbox, and that the suspect was in possession of them illegally.
The Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Andrew Riffle, 29.
Riffle was ultimately arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property, mail theft, and violation of probation terms.
He was booked at the Mendocino County jail and deemed ineligible for bail, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
