Los Altos police are seeking the public’s help in connection with an investigation into the assault of an elderly man earlier this week.

Police say that on the afternoon of Monday, Sept. 16, officers responded to a report from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office of a person who appeared to be unconscious lying near the railroad tracks in the area of Foothill Expressway and Highway 280.

Responding officers located the victim, an 89-year-old male, and discovered that he had sustained life-threatening injuries to the head.

Santa Clara County fire personnel provided medical aid, and the victim was taken to an area trauma center. The victim is currently in stable condition, police said.

Investigators have reportedly detained a person of interest in connection with the assault, and believe the victim and person of interest are acquainted.

Authorities are asking that anyone living or driving in the area of Foothill Expressway between Homestead Road and Cristo Rey Drive review their security camera footage from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Those with information relevant to the investigation are encouraged to reach out to the Los Altos Police Department at 650-947-2770. Those who prefer to remain anonymous can contact the Los Altos Police Department tip line at 650-947-2774.
