Man Arrested on Narcotics Charges After Claiming to Have Been Held at Gunpoint

Hopland CA – A Mendocino County man who called law enforcement to report being threatened with a gun was ultimately arrested himself on narcotics charges.
According to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on the night of Wednesday, Sept. 18, to the 13000 block of Mountain House Road in Hopland. Deputies had been dispatched to investigate a report of a man being held at gunpoint.
The man reportedly identified himself to deputies as Michael Giles and told them that he and his partner had been driving into the county when his partner suddenly became paranoid and said they were being followed. Giles’ partner then allegedly shined a flashlight at him from behind, but Giles believed she was pointing a firearm.
Giles pulled over, walked away from his vehicle, and contacted law enforcement, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Giles reportedly gave deputies permission to look inside his converted school bus for the firearm, leading to deputies discovering a large quantity of psilocybin mushrooms packaged in mylar bags. Deputies reportedly also found unpackaged psilocybin mushrooms, scales, and unused mylar bags.
Deputies ultimately concluded that there was no firearm and that nobody had threatened Giles with one.
Giles was taken into custody on suspicion of the possession of a controlled substance for sales and transportation of a controlled substance for sale. He was booked at the Mendocino County jail on $100,000 bond.
