On the afternoon of September 16, 2024, a shooting incident occurred at a residence on Conifer Lane in Grass Valley, California, prompting multiple 911 calls around 3:00 pm. One of the callers was the victim herself, who reported needing medical assistance for gunshot wounds to her neck. Upon arrival, Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies found the victim and facilitated her transfer to paramedics who rushed her to the hospital.
The initial investigation revealed that the suspect was last seen inside the home, where two other family members, including a child, were present. Law enforcement swiftly set up a perimeter, evacuating nearby homes with the help of Grass Valley Police and the California Highway Patrol, which provided aerial support.
The situation escalated when a woman and child safely exited the house, but the suspect remained inside, believed to be armed. The standoff led to the deployment of the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail and a Critical Incident Negotiations Team. They utilized a Bearcat armored vehicle and drones from Grass Valley and Placer County Sheriff’s Offices to inspect the home more closely.
The drones eventually identified an unresponsive individual inside, later confirmed to be the suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The 62-year-old man from Grass Valley was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The victim, a 65-year-old woman, was treated for multiple gunshot wounds and reported to be in stable condition.
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by several agencies, is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. They expressed gratitude for the cooperation from local residents during the incident.
