Interior Designer Lands in Jail

MILL VALLEY, CA  — An interior designer faces charges for allegedly stealing $80,000 worth of
jewelry and gift cards from a client. Cesalee V. Venema, 43, of Novato, was arrested on
October 16.

The victim, who lives in the Strawberry neighborhood, hired Venema to provide home design
and household organization services. She confronted the suspect when she discovered
personal property was missing. The victim told investigators that the thefts occurred during a
period of time spanning five months.

When confronted by the victim, Venema allegedly admitted to spending $5,000 on a gift card
belonging to the victim. The suspect also reportedly admitted taking another gift card worth
$200, while initially denying stealing any jewelry.

Detectives from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office searched Venema’s home and her vehicle.
Jewelry and additional gift cards believed stolen from the victim were found. Detectives also
found items apparently purchased using stolen gift cards.

When questioned by detectives, Venema admitted taking items from the victim, according to a
press release. Venema was booked for possession of stolen property, burglary,
embezzlement, and grand theft and has since posted bail.

Venema has other home design clients throughout Marin County. The sheriff’s office believes
there may be more victims. Anyone who believes they may be a victim can contact Detective
Sean Hickey at S_Hickey@MarinSheriff.Org.
