JONES VALLEY, CA  —  A woman was arrested in Shasta County earlier this week for allegedly attempting to kidnap a child from a bus stop.

In a press release, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies had been called to the 14000 block of Ravine Road in the Jones Valley area on the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 22, where an attempted kidnapping had been reported.

Witnesses said that an adult woman on a bicycle had been loitering near the bus stop, rode up to a 7-year-old child, grabbed the child’s arm, and tried to get the child to leave with her.

The child’s bus to school arrived, and the woman allegedly tried to get on the bus with her. The driver was able to close the doors and prevent the woman from boarding.

One of the child’s parents reportedly witnessed the incident and followed the suspect, detaining her until authorities arrived.

Deputies identified the suspect as Cortny Leigh Cossey, 49, of Sacramento.

Cossey was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, and was also found to have several warrants for her arrest out of Sacramento County, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Cossey was booked at the Shasta County jail.
