OAKLAND — A BART stabbing suspect is in custody at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail.
Joyanshawnt V. Portades, 34, of Oakland, remains ineligible for release on bond, following his
arrest by BART police.
Portades allegedly stabbed a 54-year-old woman in an unprovoked attack over the weekend. The
stabbing occurred aboard an Antioch-bound train as it approached the 24th Street Mission
Station in San Francisco. This happened on November 2 at 8:10 a.m.
A station agent helped the victim off the train, until BART officers arrived on the scene. She
was transported to a hospital for treatment of stabbing injuries. A BART surveillance camera
recorded the suspect later identified as Portades.
An alert BART agent saw the suspect the following afternoon at Fruitvale Station in Oakland.
“The agent contacted BART police who arrested the suspect without incident,” BART police
said in a press release.
Officers took Portades into custody on November 3 at 2:32 p.m. He was a booked on
suspicion of attempted murder first-degree. His case is reportedly being reviewed the San
Francisco District Attorney’s Office, which is expected to file charges.
Portades has multiple arrests and convictions on his record. He was convicted for first-degree
residential burglary in September 2023. He has other prior convictions were for second-
degree robbery, receiving stolen property, and possession of cocaine base for sale.
