SAN RAFAEL — A man with a history of arrests for petty theft has been arrested again—this
time for allegedly threatening a store security employee with a machete.

San Rafael police detained the suspect about an hour after the incident began. Nelson Calderon, 24 of San
Rafael, was placed under arrest on November 6 at 2:40 p.m. Calderon, who is a transient, was
transported to Marin County Jail, where he remains housed in lieu of $50,000 bond.

The incident unfolded in the gardening department where Calderon behaved in manner that
attracted attention and aroused suspicions. A store security employee suspected that he was
going to steal merchandise. The security employee confronted Calderon about a gardening
machete.

During the confrontation. Calderon allegedly threatened the employee with the machete.
Soon thereafter, the suspect fled taking the machete with him. Fortunately, no injuries were
reported.

Officers detained and arrested Calderon near the intersection of Bellam Boulevard and
Windward Way in San Rafael. Calderon was booked on open charges for robbery.

This marks Calderon’s third arrest this year. He was arrested in September for petty theft and
public intoxication. He was arrested in August for possession of drug paraphernalia, and
contempt of court for disobeying a court order.

Prior to this Calderon was arrested in 2023 for petty theft and possession of drug
paraphernalia. In 2022, he was arrested for possession of a narcotic controlled substance,
and public intoxication.
