BERKELEY — Police arrested a man suspected of committing burglaries, stealing cars and
identity theft. The suspect 27-year-old Nelson G. Sanabria-Gudiel, 27, of Los Angeles,
remains in custody in lieu of $165,000, pending a pretrial hearing on December 10.
Berkeley police investigators used surveillance technology, which ultimately led to his arrest.
Officers placed Sanabria-Gudiel under arrest on November 29 at 3:51 p.m. He is being
housed at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail. Sanabria-Gudiel was charged with first degree residential burglary
,residential burglary, grand theft, as well as taking a vehicle without the owners consent.
Sanabria-Gudiel allegedly entered two Berkeley apartments in October through unlocked
doors, while the residents were sleeping. Computers and credit cards were stolen from the
victims. Sanabria-Gudiel later allegedly attempted to use a stolen credit card to make a
purchase.
He was apprehended after an automated license plate reader alerted police that a stolen car
was traveling in the downtown area. Police stopped the car and detained Sanabria-Gudiel.
When officers searched the car they found personal identifying information, not belonging to
him. Additional surveillance video evidence also implicates the suspect.
A second car that Sanabria-Gudiel allegedly stole was found in October inside a Berkeley
parking garage. Evidence of identity theft was also found inside that car.
So far this year, Sanabria-Gudiel has been arrested four times. At the time of his most recent
arrest, he was free on bond, with a misdemeanor charge pending, for carrying a concealed
weapon in August.
