A Solano County man was arrested after allegedly firing a gunshot inside a local hotel and standing off against responding authorities.
According to a press release by the Vallejo Police Department, officers responded on the night of Tuesday, Dec. 17, to a hotel on the 2000 block of Solano Ave., where people had reported hearing gunshots. Witnesses, including hotel staff, reported that a man had brandished a firearm and fired it inside the building unprovoked.
Police evacuated employees and people staying at the hotel, and began a “tactical surround” of the hotel. The suspect allegedly refused to surrender despite multiple requests. Officers also discovered the suspect was a convicted felon on parole and had an active warrant to his name for parole violations.
Vallejo PD’s Emergency Services Unit, including SWAT and Hostage Negotiation responded to the scene, while the California Highway Patrol closed the onramps to I-80 in the immediate area.
Authorities attempted “less-lethal” methods of getting the suspect to leave his room, including introducing chemical agents into the room. At that point the suspect, whom police identified as Jeffrey Joseph Caldwell, 36, fled the building and was apprehended by police just before 1 a.m. the following morning, Dec. 18.
Officers searched the premises and reportedly recovered an unregistered firearm.
Caldwell was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and parole violation. He was booked at the Solano County jail.
