San Mateo Police Respond to Armed Robbery at 7-Eleven

SAN MATEO, CA

A San Mateo man was arrested after allegedly trying to rob a 7-Eleven and brandishing a knife at the clerk.

According to a press release by the San Mateo Police Department, officers responded to a 7-Eleven on the 600 block of E. 3rd Ave. on the night of Sunday, Dec. 15, following a report of an armed robbery. Employees reported that a male suspect had been stealing alcohol from the store.

When the employees attempted to stop him and recover the stolen items, the suspect allegedly brandished a knife and struck one of the clerks. A customer intervened, and the group disarmed the man and restrained him until police arrived.

Officers identified the suspect as Carlos Duarte Umul, 19.

After securing Umul in handcuffs, officers searched him and reportedly discovered drug paraphernalia in his pants pocket and suspected methamphetamine in a small satchel.

Duarte Umul was medically evaluated before being transported to and booked at the San Mateo County jail.
