Sacramento, CA —
Stolen vehicle pursuit leads law enforcement on a wild ride from Sacramento to San Francisco.
At around 11 p.m. Dec. 26, a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Patrol Deputy observed a vehicle in the area of Sunrise Boulevard and Coloma Road that matched the description of a vehicle that had been stolen in a carjacking reported to the San Francisco Police Department earlier that day. A Sheriff’s K9 unit and other patrol units in the area responded to assist.
As the deputies activated their overhead emergency lights to initiate a vehicle stop near Winding Way and San Juan Road, the suspect in that vehicle, later identified as 34-year-old Anthony Hurtado, began to accelerate in an attempt to get away. He then reached out of the driver’s side window, pointed a handgun toward the deputies’ vehicles, and fired several rounds. Deputies continued to pursue Hurtado but never returned fire. Approximately one minute later, Hurtado brought the vehicle to a stop and surrendered peacefully without further incident.
Fortunately, no one was hurt during this incident. Deputies did not locate any vehicles or property that were damaged. Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene and collected evidence, including the Hurtado’s handgun and spent shell casings. Hurtado was transported and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for multiple felony charges, including attempted murder. The San Francisco Police Department will pursue additional charges on their original carjacking case as applicable. Hurtado is scheduled to appear in court in Sacramento on December 30 and is currently ineligible for bail.
