Butte County Deputies Arrest Man for Alleged Attempted Burglary

CHICO, Calif. — Butte County authorities recently arrested an individual after interrupting an alleged burglar.

According to a press release by the sheriff’s office, deputies responded late on the night of Sunday, Dec. 29, to the area of the 1300 block of Canyon Rim Place in Chico to investigate a report of a suspicious person near the front gate of a residence.

At the scene, deputies located a vehicle parked in a dark area near the home, along with evidence that someone had been walking the property. The occupants of the home told deputies that no one should have been on the property at that time, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies continued searching and reportedly found an individual hiding behind an open shed. The individual allegedly ran from deputies but was detained after a short pursuit.

Deputies allegedly found the individual to be in possession of a face mask and an empty backpack, and noted he was also wearing dark clothing.

The individual, identified as Stephen Houchin, was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
