On January 2, 2025, Rigoberto Castillo, 31, was sentenced to 11 years and 8 months in state prison following his guilty plea to charges of felony assault with a deadly weapon, enhanced by great bodily injury, and felony vandalism. Castillo also faced additional charges for a prior strikeable offense and a parole violation.

The charges stemmed from two incidents. In October 2023, Castillo was involved in a vandalism case, and on January 3, 2024, he was taken into custody after a reported stabbing in Fort Bidwell. Castillo had remained in custody while both cases were resolved.

During the sentencing hearing, the stabbing victim provided a statement commending the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, Victim Services, and Surprise Valley Hospital for their dedicated support from the time of the attack to the resolution of the case.

The Modoc County District Attorney’s Office reaffirmed its commitment to public safety, justice, and prioritizing victims’ rights. Castillo will remain in custody pending his transfer to state prison.
