Jury finds man guilty of 7 felonies
On January 9, 2025 an El Dorado County jury found John Edward Tyler guilty of committing seven felonies and one misdemeanor. The jury found  Tyler guilty on one count of criminal threats, three counts of possessing explosive devices in public, one count of possession of bomb making materials, one count of felon in Possession of a Firearm, one count of Possession of a Zip Gun, one count of Felon in Possession of Ammunition, and one count of Unlawful Possession of Tear Gas. The jury further found several factors in aggravation to be true.
On Oct. 6, 2023, Tyler was at the El Dorado County fairgrounds when he confronted a person who was nearby eating their lunch. Tyler approached the victim and threatened to shoot them. The victim called 911 and Placerville Police officers responded. Officers found  Tyler in an agitated state. In plain view on the passenger seat of  Tyler’s truck was a can of pepper spray. Tyler had previous felony convictions and was prohibited from possessing pepper spray. A subsequent search of the truck revealed a homemade shotgun, numerous rounds of ammunition, three pipe bombs and additional materials for manufacturing explosive devices.
Members of the El Dorado County Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team responded and determined that the suspected pipe bombs were indeed actual explosive devices. X-ray images were taken of the devices, and it was determined that they were filled with gunpowder and added shrapnel. The bombs were removed from the scene and taken to a closed range where the devices were rendered safe.
It was later discovered that Tyler had a previous conviction for possession of an explosive device.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Jay Linden and investigated by Eldorado County Sheriffs Dept and Detective Michael Muckerheide. The parties are to return for sentencing on Friday, February 7, 2025 in Department 2.
