SFPD Citywide Plainclothes Team Achieves Over 600 Felony Arrests in 2024

The San Francisco Police Department’s Citywide Plainclothes team made 601 felony arrests and seized 73 firearms in 2024, reflecting their significant contribution to the city’s reduction in crime, according to Chief Bill Scott. This specialized team operates covertly, focusing on crimes such as auto burglaries, drug offenses, retail theft, and violent crime.
The team’s efforts represent an increase from 2023 when 500 felony arrests were made, and 60 firearms were confiscated. Enhanced technologies, including Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) and drones acquired in 2024, have played a crucial role in supporting these operations.
The Plainclothes team collaborates closely with investigations bureaus, patrol officers, analysts, and drone operators to address challenging crimes. Their efforts contributed to significant decreases in San Francisco’s crime rates, including a 54% drop in property crimes and the city’s lowest homicide rate since 1960.
Already in 2025, the team has demonstrated its effectiveness. On January 14, officers used ALPR technology to track a stolen Acura in the South of Market neighborhood. The suspects were arrested on charges including vehicle theft, possession of burglary tools, and drug possession.
Chief Scott commended the team’s work, highlighting the impact of advanced technologies and their dedication to keeping the city safe. Last year’s success marked one of the most substantial declines in crime in decades, with overall crime reaching its lowest level in 20 years.
