Tuolumne County Authorities Conduct Operation to Curb Illegal Sale of Tobacco to Minors

“The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO), in partnership with Tuolumne County Public Health, recently conducted a minor tobacco purchase operation at local businesses within Tuolumne County. This initiative aimed to curb the sale of tobacco products to minors, educate local businesses on laws related to the sales of tobacco and increase compliance with tobacco laws.

The operation was in response to multiple reports that flavored tobacco products – illegal to sell in California, and predominately marketed to and used by youth – were being sold to minors within our community.

During the operation TCSO Explorers under the age of 21 attempted to purchase tobacco and/or nicotine products from 31 stores within Tuolumne County.

Outcomes of the operation included:

• 7 citations issued for violation of California Penal Code 308(A)(1)(A)(I) – Selling tobacco/nicotine or tobacco/nicotine paraphernalia to someone under 21 years of age.

• Stores were inspected and those found selling flavored tobacco products in violation of California law were educated by Public Health’s Tobacco Prevention Program (TPP) and given the opportunity to remove those products from their shelves.

• Education was provided by the deputies and Public Health’s TPP to local businesses on tobacco rules and regulations.

Future operations are being planned to continue promoting compliance with California’s tobacco laws and decrease tobacco/nicotine sales to minors.”
