PSPD Teamwork and Resource Utilization Lead to Peaceful Resolution of Burglary Incident

PALM SPRINGS, CA — “On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at approximately 4:53 PM, PSPD officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of Girasol Ave regarding a burglary in progress. Upon arrival, officers quickly established a secure perimeter around the residence. Observing that the front door had been forcibly opened and detecting motion inside, the officers made numerous announcements, but there was no response from within the home.
Officers deployed a drone to conduct an initial interior search. While the drone’s surveillance did not locate the suspect, it revealed several closed doors within the residence that required further investigation. After additional announcements went unanswered, a K-9 was deployed to assist in the search.
Within seconds of the K-9 entering the residence, the suspect, later identified as Eugene Kirkwood, emerged from hiding with his hands raised in surrender. The K-9 was quickly recalled and returned to his handler. Kirkwood complied fully with officers’ commands and was taken into custody without incident.
This incident highlights the professionalism and collaborative efforts of PSPD officers, who slowed down the situation and strategically utilized available resources, including the drone and K-9 unit, to ensure a safe and peaceful resolution.
Chief Andy Mills commended the team, stating, “The outstanding coordination, de-escalation strategies, and resourcefulness displayed by our officers demonstrate the dedication and training of our department. This outcome exemplifies our commitment to public safety and the effective use of modern technology and specialized units.”
