SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — A man from Washington was taken into custody after a deputy discovered over 25 pounds of suspected cocaine during a traffic stop in Shasta County.

According to a press release by the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, an officer with the California Highway Patrol stopped a vehicle in the Lakehead area on the night of Thursday, Jan. 30. The officer identified the driver as 27-year-old Aniseto Chavez of Issaquah, Washington.

Chavez was reportedly also accompanied by a juvenile passenger, whose name was not released due to their age.

The officer later conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle with a narcotics detection K9 and reportedly discovered about 26.85 pounds of suspected cocaine, along with around $2,000 in U.S. currency.

Shasta Interagency Narcotics Task Force detectives responded to the scene and arrested Chavez on suspicion of the possession and transportation of a controlled substance for the purpose of sales, child endangerment, and utilizing a fabricated compartment to transport a controlled substance.

The juvenile passenger was taken into protective custody by Shasta County Children and Family Services, according to the sheriff’s office.
