Grover Beach Police Arrest Man for DUI and Attempted Assault on Officer

GROVER BEACH, CA — “Grover Beach Police Officers arrested 62-year-old Grover Beach resident Steven Tomis last night, February 2, 2025, after he intentionally rammed an occupied GBPD patrol vehicle. GBPD officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Leoni Drive regarding a report of a disturbance involving a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers located Tomis driving a 1974 Ford pickup truck and determined that he had collided with another vehicle.
GBPD officers attempted to contact Tomis to conduct an investigation. He evaded the first arriving officer and attempted to flee the area in the truck. The second officer arriving activated his overhead emergency lights in an attempt to stop the truck. Tomis accelerated the vehicle, steered it towards the officer’s patrol vehicle, and intentionally collided head-on with the officer. After the collision, Tomis was taken into custody without incident. The GBPD patrol officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital. Both vehicles sustained major damage. Unfortunately, the patrol vehicle was brand new and had only been in service for a few weeks.
See the attached video for footage of the incident.
Mr. Tomis was found to be operating the truck under the influence of alcohol.
He was arrested and booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on the following charges:
• PC 664/PC 187(a): Attempted Murder
• PC 245(c): Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer
