Mechanic in Custody Without Bond Faces Charges for Murder

—  By Jim Emerson

HAYWARD, CA Larry J. Lopez, 43, an auto mechanic from Hayward, is being held in custody
with bond denied. Lopez allegedly is responsible for murdering a man on the 500 block of
Ramos Avenue. The 68-year-old victim Rolando J. Silva was fatally shot inside his home on
February 2.

Officers responded to the victim’s residence at approximately 9:12 a.m., after a woman
reported that her landlord had been shot. Officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot
wound, and paramedics who also responded pronounced the victim dead.

Detectives who investigated the incident identified Lopez as Silva’s suspected killer. Lopez
was placed under arrest several hours later at 7:42 p.m. Lopez was transported and booked
into Alameda County Santa Rita Jail.

“Lopez, personally and intentionally used a gun to shoot and kill Mr. Silva,” alleges the
Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. The suspect and victim knew each other for
approximately 25 years.

Charges were filed against Lopez for murder, with enhancements for use of a firearm causing
great bodily injury or death. Lopez is scheduled to appear for a plea hearing on February 13.
If he is convicted for murder and the enhancement charges, Lopez faces 50 years to life in
state prison.

The investigation of this fatal shooting remains ongoing. Anyone with information can contact
Hayward police detective Dominick Reichmuth at 510-293-7176.
