Modesto Police K-9 Assists in Major Narcotics Seizure

MODESTO, CA — “Our community is safer today thanks to the efforts of one of our dedicated K-9 Officers, who helped locate a significant quantity of illicit drugs intended for distribution within our community.
On Friday, January 31, a Modesto Police Officer and his K-9 partner conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for multiple vehicle code violations. This K-9 is trained in narcotics detection, and during the stop alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 2 pounds of heroin and 14 pounds of fentanyl pills from a vehicle during a traffic stop.
The driver, identified as 49-year-old Jose Tafolla-Gutierrez of Modesto, was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges related to narcotics trafficking and distribution.
Sgt. John Carrico, who supervises the Modesto Police Department K-9 Unit, emphasized the importance of these highly trained teams, stating:
“Our K-9 handlers and their partners dedicate hours to monthly training to ensure they perform at the highest level our community expects. This is just one example of how a police K-9 plays a crucial role in keeping these deadly substances – and those who seek to distribute them – off our streets and out of our community.”
The Modesto Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety of our residents by aggressively combating drug trafficking and working diligently to remove dangerous substances from our neighborhoods.”
