OAKLAND, CA — California Highway Patrol detectives arrested Jonathan J. Barragan-Padilla, 19
of Oakland, for a freeway shooting during morning rush hour.
The shooting occurred March 4 at approximately 7:30 a.m., on southbound Interstate 880, near 16th Avenue in Oakland.
As CHP officers were responding to the scene they learned that the victim was uninjured, returned home and waited to speak with officers.
Meanwhile, the suspect was believed to be driving around in the victim’s neighborhood.
Southbound freeway lanes were temporarily closed, and CHP notified Oakland police to be
on the lookout for the suspect.
Oakland police found the vehicle associated with the suspect parked nearby and unoccupied.
The suspect vehicle was placed under surveillance. Oakland officers detained two persons
who were later seen entering the vehicle. CHP detectives responded and assumed primary
responsibility for the investigation.
A prepared statement released by the CHP Golden Gate Division said one the persons
detained was the shooting suspect. CHP detectives placed Barragan-Padilla under arrest at
8:21 a.m. He was transported and booked into Alameda County Santa Rita Jail.
Following his arrest, CHP detectives obtained a warrant to search Barragan-Padilla’s
resident.
The detectives recovered an unregistered loaded handgun, which they believe the
suspect used to shoot at the victim.
Multiple charges were filed subsequently against Barragan-Padilla. His charges relate to
shooting from a motor vehicle at a vulnerable victim, and assault with an unregistered firearm.
