SAN RAFAEL. CA — Police pursued two armed robbery suspects who fled on bicycles in the Canal District.
One of the suspects, Juan Lopez-Lopez, 29, of San Rafael, was quickly detained and arrested. Investigators are following up leads to identify the second suspect who
remains at large.
The victim flagged down a patrol officer on March 20 at 5:30 a.m. The victim reported being
robbed at gunpoint by two men near Kerner Boulevard and Canal Street.
The perpetrators fled taking with them the victim’s personal property. The victim was not injured.
One of the suspects was located quickly and fled on a bicycle until he was surrounded near the intersection of Kerner and Bellam boulevards.
Lopez-Lopez who works as a laborer was placed under arrested at 5:58 a.m., without further
incident.
Officers retraced his flight path and found a bag that he allegedly discarded in some bushes.
A loaded handgun was found inside the bag, which police believe was stolen.
“Investigators are working to determine the origin of the handgun,” San Rafael police said in a prepared
statement.
Lopez-Lopez was was transported to Marin County Jail, where he was booked on open
charges.
His charges include armed robbery, carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a
controlled substance, and evading/obstructing an officer. Incidentally, he was cited also for not
having a bicycle lamp. Lopez-Lopez remains in custody in lieu of $75,000 bond.
