Sheriff’s Office: Man Arrested on Felony Warrants Initially Gave False Name to Deputy

ARCATA, CA — A man was arrested on felony warrants after initially providing a false identity to authorities, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.
In a press release, the sheriff’s office reported that a deputy had stopped an individual in the area of Vance Avenue and Pedro Lane on the night of March 3. The individual allegedly provided a false name at first, but was ultimately identified as John Barton, 36, of Samoa.
While the deputy was verifying Barton’s identity, Barton allegedly discarded a plastic bag over the roadway barricade. The deputy recovered the bag, along with a second bag discovered on the ground near Barton.
The deputy later confirmed through testing that the bags contained a combined total of just under 7-and-a-half grams of methamphetamine, the sheriff’s office said.
During the initial contact, Barton reportedly said he was having trouble breathing. Medical personnel responded to the scene and took him to an area hospital.
After being medically cleared, Barton was booked at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on suspicion of providing false identification to a police officer, possession of methamphetamine, and violation of probation.
