Two suspects arrested for robbery in Central Fresno
FRESNO – Police arrested two men who allegedly went on a short robbing spree in Central Fresno on Wednesday night.
The two suspects, 24-year-old Ruben Ramirez and 30-year-old Julio Mendoza, allegedly approached a man at around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at a bus stop on Belmont and San Pablo avenues. According to police, the two suspects pistol-whipped the 52-year-old victim and then robbed him.
After the incident, the two suspects took off on foot, police said. Witnesses to the crime pointed police in the direction that the suspects fled.
When police caught up to the two men, they witnessed what appeared to be another robbery attempt, this time aimed at a group of teenagers located at San Pablo and Bremer avenues.
“(Officers) witnessed what they believed was an altercation between the suspects and what we believe now is a victim,” said Lt. John Papaleo from the Fresno Police Department.
The suspects didn’t listen to the officers as they approached the scene.
“When our officers tried to contact the two individuals they thought were suspects, they ran from the scene,” Papaleo said.
At one point, one of the suspects brandished what appeared to be a handgun, Papaleo said. The officers took chase and eventually caught up to the suspects and were able to take them into custody.
Police found an air-soft gun near the scene.
Ramirez and Mendoza face several armed robbery charges.
The first victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries he received from the pistol-whipping, but his condition is not known at this time.
