Thief Ditches Car with Lady Friend Inside, Rolls 200′ Down Embankment

SHASTA LAKE CITY – A car thief ditched his still moving stolen car, with his lady friend inside, and it rolled 200′ down an embankment.

It began on Monday at 2:00 a.m., when a deputy spotted the vehicle without a rear license plate. The deputy then engaged his siren and lights in an effort to stop the vehicle.

However, the suspect would have none of it. Instead, he sped up, went through a stop sign and drove “against traffic in the wrong direction.”

Other deputies joined the pursuit. Running more stop signs, the suspect then eventually reached the Centimudi Boat Launch area.

The, at the dead end, which is an upper parking lot, 52-year-old Duane Lee Enquist jumped out of the vehicle as it continued moving. The driver-less vehicle then rolled “off the pavement and over the embankment of approximately 200 feet down.”

K-9 Fritz arrived and assisted in locating Enquist as he hid behind a bush.

The stolen vehicle held a passenger – 49-year-old Shingletown resident Kristi Kae O’Neil. She was “visibly shaken” and treated both on scene and at Mercy Hospital.

Enquist has been charged with felony evading, resisting, possession of a stolen vehicle, driving on a suspended license and an outstanding warrant.
