Hash oil experiment causes explosion
A Los Osos man was arrested on Thursday by San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s deputies after he allegedly caused an explosion while trying to make hash oil.
According to a press release from the sheriff’s department, deputies were dispatched to a call around 7:50 p.m. Thursday evening involving a report of a loud explosion in the 2100 block of Ferrell Lane in Los Osos. When they arrived, deputies found John Odom Jr., 55, who allegedly caused an explosion in his kitchen while attempting to convert marijuana into hash, which is also known as honey oil.
According to investigators, the extraction process uses parts of the marijuana plant that are low in THC content and converts them to a more concentrated oil, using butane gas in the process.
Deputies say the explosion blew the glass slider off the frame of Odom’s home, but did no damage to neighboring apartments.
Odom was transported to a hospital for treatment of burns to his legs and later booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail for manufacturing or converting a controlled substance through a chemical extraction process.
